The End-over-end Worm is possibly the most well-known creature in 3DVCE. It moves by somersaulting.

Somersaulting behavior[]

Neural network[]

The worm's brain contains no oscillating signals; it contains only a contact sensor that is responsible for the tumbling behavior and an internal gyroscope that helps keep it upright. This can be demonstrated by spawning the end-over-end worm in zero gravity (Ctrl-G). It will quickly cease somersaulting in midair because of the deactivation of contact sensors, but if moved around with the grabber the internal gyroscope causes it to slightly squirm.

Physiology[]

The orange panel-like "antennae" are largely responsible for aiding the internal gyroscope in keeping the worm's balance after each flip. However the end-over-end worm's stair-shaped body also contributes a small part to stability.

Behavior[]

An end-over-end worm is spawned upside down and first makes a lean forward. It initially has difficulty in uprighting itself and stumbles for a while before gaining balance. The worm's somersaults when headfirst and tailfirst are not identical. When headfirst, it twists its normally stair-shaped segments into a messy helix arrangement and makes a sinusoid motion, but it lands back on the ground right on the sinuating part of its body before the entire wave has passed through its body and begins a tailfirst somersault. The tailfirst somersault is slower and involves the segments straightening back into a stairstep arrangement in a wave while the body begins a slow ladderlike climb.

Relatives[]

Ancestor[]

The unnamed ancestor lacks the distinctive orange panel-like "antennae" and has cuboid instead of stair-shaped segments. Because it lacks the orange panels, it cannot stay balanced and sometimes falls over. This behavior is interesting in that the worm employs two types of movement: normal somersaulting when balanced and clumsily rolling sideways like most other rolling worms when imbalanced. It is still able to get up after rolling by quickly twirling its extremities when they touch the ground. As shown in the video, the creature rolls more frequently and less clumsily on the bumpy ground. The ancestor is not available for download, but currently breeding attempts are being made to back-evolve the end-over-end worm into this creature.

The Final End-over-end Worm differs little from the original except for its lighter coloration, more graceful, higher, and more efficient somersaults, and improved balance. Unlike the original, it is still able to move without stumbling if the panel-like "antennae" are surgically amputated.

Video[]

Note the final worm does not stumble immediately after being spawned, unlike the original.
